What gives a form sufficient vitality, and at what moment does it arrive at a complete state of being? In Zhang Ning’s practice, the core concern of “life” lies less in duration than in an intensity of presence — a force that can be tangibly perceived in space. The Exhibition Mayfly and Narcissus, presents at PAINTIQUE, centering on Zhang Ning’s two sculptural series, “Mayfly” and “Narcissus”, situated within a domestic environment shaped by art furniture. Form, space, and viewing intertwine, creating a present moment that holds both spiritual depth and the warmth of everyday life.

The mayfly lives only briefly. Zhuangzi once lamented such brevity in the phrase “small creatures know nothing of spring and autumn,” while later writings compared human life to the mayfly’s fleeting existence. Zhang Ning’s “Mayfly” series is not merely a realistic rendering of a tiny creature, but a philosophical inquiry cast into fragile form. Amid the noise of contemporary life, these works quietly resonate with reflections on the nature of life itself.

The “Narcissus” series carries questions of self-hood and a longing for permanence. Complex emotional experiences and the shifting currents of consciousness are given concrete form; they settle inward, becoming projections of human feeling and inner states, while inviting the viewer to enter and experience them.

“Mayfly and Narcissus — each a complete living form.” One by one, they appear in the lake of the mind.
