Shen Yongji has long focused on the contemporary exploration of traditional Chinese artifacts. His practice introduces the ancient technique of cuo jin yin (gold and silver inlay) into a modern context, combining gold and silver with contemporary materials such as acrylic and crystal resin to expand the expressive dimensions of sculptural space. He emphasizes a creative approach that “extracts from tradition, inherits it, and integrates it with the present.” His sculptures, both in material innovation and visual presentation, challenge the conventional definition of “sculpture.” He continues the use of traditional Chinese craftsmanship within contemporary art and has successfully developed a distinct visual and aesthetic language of his own.
His works have been featured at numerous domestic and international art fairs and biennales, and have been exhibited in art museums and institutions such as the Liu Haisu Art Museum, Today Art Museum, Ningbo Museum of Art, Taiyuan Art Museum, Shanxi Museum, and the Louvre. They have also been collected by institutions including the Fondation Louis Vuitton as well as various private collectors.
