Since Dong Zi was 5, she studied Chinese traditional painting with father Wang Shanyuan. In 1977, she learned writing composition with teacher Liu. In 1984, she studied under the tutelage teacher Dong Han-ming in Beijing Youth Club.
In 1984, she entered Beijing Academy of Craft and Fine Art and studied sculpting art with teacher Yang Ge; studied Chinese traditional painting with teacher Wang Bing-fu and decorating art with teacher Li Tong respectively. She graduated from Beijing Academy of Craft and Fine Art in 1988 and had been teaching there for 5 years.
